Londonderry is the only remaining completely Walled City in Ireland
and one of the finest examples in Europe. These
famous walls which date back to the early part of the seventeenth
century have withstood several sieges. The most famous began on
the morning of April 18, 1689, when the deposed King James II arrived
in Londonderry as part of his campaign to reclaim the English
throne. It all began when the defenders fired their cannons and
several British officers were killed. Thus began a 105 day siege, one
of the longest in European history. There are fine views from the top of the walls which encircle
the old city, a circuit of one mile.
